K 9 DATA - OPEN DATA BASE FOR GOLDEN RETRIEVER
PEDIGREES.
The Golden Retriever is a very popular dog breed. So finding Golden Retriever
breeder's shouldn't be a difficult task. That being said, not every breeder is
trustworthy. One of the worst places you could purchase a puppy is directly from a pet
store. Why? The source where almost all pet stores receive their puppies are from
puppy mills.
What is a puppy mill ? It is an illegal large breeding operation that is involved in the
mass production of puppies for profit. To make matters worse, the way the dogs are
treated at these mills is simply deplorable. Most of these puppy mills are filthy, and are
run by "breeders" who have no knowledge of proper breeding in terms of
temperament, basic health, socialization, pedigrees. Nor do they take time for
vaccinations/wormings.Most of the dogs are confined to small cages, are poorly fed,
denied proper vet care, grooming, and are left in a place that has no temperature
control.
What can you do ? Do not purchase from pet stores, or from Golden breeder's you do
not trust, or cannot answer all of your questions directly. Please learn the facts. Do
your part as a responsible dog owner and only purchase from a legitimate breeder. And
spread the word about puppy mills. The more people aware, the less chance these
horrible dog prisons have of surviving.
Reputable breeders, on the other hand, care about preserving their dogs by keeping
them healthy. A reputable breeder should never be disturbed by the many questions
you may have. Also, do expect many questions from the breeder as well. If you find your
speaking with a breeder without knowledge of pedigrees, clearances, guarantees,
vaccinations or worming, or is disturbed by your questions, walk away and look
elsewhere.
A good reputable breeder should as well be a member of AKC - American Kennel Club
or UKC - United Kennel Club as well as a member of the GRCA - Golden Retriever
Club Of America . References should be easily offered at your request. Don't be
alarmed to find that most breeder's will provide you a "LIMITED non breeding
registration for your puppy, and will require in a sale agreement that your puppy be
Spayed / Neutered. As a good reputable breeder wants to assure that the puppy is going
to a loving, pet / companion home, and will not be used for the purpose of breeding in
puppy mills or backyard breeders. A reputable breeder will also require the puppy be
returned back if you can no longer keep the puppy for any reason. And assist you with
helpful guidance when puppy is in your care after your purchase.
You may as well find that a reputable breeder will require a deposit, and apply you to
the list. Which in most cases depending on the circumstances will be non refundable.
Do not find it unusual for the breeder to avoid visits to a litter under the age of 7 weeks
to choose your puppy. This helps to prevent any harm to the puppies by rough handling
by children, or diseases being brought into the environment, until pups have had first
vaccination. Normally good breeder's will have a well informed website which will
include photos of the litter as they grow for the potential puppy owners to view, while
waiting for your visit to see the litter, and choose your puppy. So do not be alarmed by
this policy. It shows the breeder cares. You may also find that the breeder will evaluate
you and your family, your lifestyle, and match the puppy for you. As they have raised
the litter, spent quality time with each puppy, and will know which puppy best suits
your family.
Adding a Golden puppy to your family is a decision that should not to be made lightly.
Your puppy should not be purchased on a whim, nor for a quick gift. Raising a puppy
takes much time with training to become a well behaved member of your family. I do
start your puppy with crate training , however it does not come potty trained ! I do offer
lifetime help with your puppy in training tips, and guidance, and can help find a
professional trainer in your area. However the consistency is your part of raising the
puppy to be its best.
It's important to be home during the puppy's first few months. Part time at the least, full
time is ideal. Puppies need the proper time put into them to get the best out of them.
The Golden is an intelligent, natural natured dog, easy to train and are great with
families, children and other pets. Golden puppies are very adaptable and usually settle
in very easily with minimal trouble. A secure fence is a must, or at least supervised lead
walks each time your puppy goes out to potty. Puppy must never be left unsupervised at
any time.
Also, you will find that prices vary with breeders. Why do prices vary ? A good
reputable breeder with "Quality" puppies will normally charge between $1500 to $2500
for a pet companion puppy on a Limited non breeding registration, depending on the
specific breeding and Sire/Dam. These may be dogs from top show lines, Champion
parents, or Imported dogs from out of country.
Years of knowledge and breeding are what separate these price ranges. Good breeders
know what are behind their dogs, they take time to properly care for the litter. Only
quality food, and vitamins are given. Most loose much sleep during the first few weeks
of the litter's arrival, and puppies are raised in their home. So do not feel that you are
getting a bargain, buy rushing into a low cost puppy, that may have been raised by a
breeder with no knowledge of breeding, that will only cause heartache later down the
road, when you begin to incur very expensive vet bills due to puppy being poorly bred,
inbred, or not properly cared for and socialized from birth. Or find you have acquired a
Golden with an aggressive temperament, that now needs to be parted with. You may
only be wanting a family pet companion, and do not much care for having a "show
dog", however "quality" and a sound, healthy puppy, only come from the best lineage
and a good reputable breeder. There are many good breeders and prices do vary more
or less, however, please do your homework. It's most important to feel very comfortable
with your breeder.
It's also important to see the parents !! I cannot stress this enough. At the least, the
Dam (Mom) should always be on the premises as sometimes, the Sire (Dad) may be out
to a show, or the breeder will have had semen sent for the breeding. However if the
Sire is not viewable. Photos and pedigree should always be available.
Also....unless your having puppy shipped, SEE THE FACILITY ~ see where the dogs live,
interact with them, See where the puppies have been raised. Check the litter for
parasites, runny nose, runny eyes, poor coat, thinness, diarrhea. A well cared for puppy
should have a nice chunky fat healthy look all about the body, a big belly on a thin
puppy is a sign of parasites. Do not feel because puppy has a big belly, it's well fed, and
healthy. Puppy should never be thin with a big belly. The puppies should be plump,
smell clean, be bathed, have nice fluffy coats, nails clipped, ears clean, and have happy
outgoing Golden personalities. These are all signs that the breeder has taken much
time raising the litter, and everything was done correctly to assure the best health of
the litter. Ask the breeder as well, what kind of puppy food and vitamins they provide.
Your puppy should as well come with a signed sale agreement/guarantee, a signed
Health certificate by a state licensed vet. A worming, vaccination record, copies of
pedigrees on both mom/dad. Any clearance copies of mom or dad or grandparents,
puppy food, and feeding schedule. If none of the above are offered, walk away and look
elsewhere.
If you are having your puppy shipped by your breeder, (which is not uncommon in most
cases) ask for references. You should feel as comfortable as possible with your breeder
before you finalize the purchase. Ask the references for photos of their dogs, and how
they felt with the breeder in their purchase. Never agree to do a Western union
payment. Pay Pal by credit card is safe and advisable, or sending a personal check to
the breeder for deposit. However have something signed by both yourself and the
breeder prior to sending deposit. Ask to see a contract of sale. If your feeling pressured
by the breeder for the deposit, look elsewhere, and please beware of many scams.
Also, before you seriously consider this breed, please remember that Goldens do shed
profusely. And require regular brushing in between grooming trips. So do expect some
hair about the house. If hair bothers you then this is not the breed for you.
The golden is a beautiful dog, by far. They make wonderful family companions, they are
loyal and very devoted to their families. They are highly intelligent, and easily trained.
I am more than happy to discuss any questions you may have in search for your next
family member. If you feel you may be interested in a South Wind puppy. Please fill out
my puppy Questionnaire form on my introduction page, and I will be in touch for an
interview.
Buying your puppy is a "lifetime" commitment. Careful research and time should be
taken before you purchase your next family member/companion. There are many good
breeders who will take the time spent with you to assure your most happy in your
purchase of your Golden Retriever puppy. So please do not purchase from Mills or Pet
Stores ~ We MUST to put a stop to these horrible puppy prisons and close them down.
